LATE CORRECTIONS
Col. 845—Wines and Spirits Bill:
*Dr. A. L. DE JAGER (Paarl) pointed out that in most komfyt or boiled grape juice, there was no deleterious matter. The reason that they allowed most grape syrup was that it was practically the same product as the wine, and a cheap wine could not be made from it. In this way they did not cheapen the wine as they would do if they added cane sugar; and it was added for sweetening purposes after the fermentation had ceased so that there is not in consequence of its addition any increase in the alcoholic strength of the wine. Continuing, he said that cane sugar was similarly used for sweetening and colouring purposes in the manufacture of a certain class of wine, but was not to increase the alcoholic strength of the wine or brandy. If they were going to make good wine, then they should make it from the correct material. If they wanted to sweeten the wine then they could do it with the other part of the vine. By doing so they did not increase the amount of alcohol. By adding cane sugar they would produce more alcohol than they ought to produce. The legislation that was canned into effect in the Cape Colony had resulted in better wine being made, and they could challenge any part of the world so far as light wine was concerned. It had all been due to the legislation enacted in the old Cape Colony. The hon. member for Cape Town, Central, had quoted the case of Algiers, but he hoped that they in this country would not follow the bad example for wholesale adulteration that was set there for the purpose of flooding France with cheap wines—an effort on the part of adulterators that led to a revolution in the wine provinces of France.
