Several lawsuits resulting from the occurrences in the area are still pending. Furthermore, incidents of violence between the rival factions take place from time to time. Therefore, I do not consider it desirable in the public interest to furnish the information.

Trespass: arrests 112. Mr S S VAN DER MERWE

asked the Minister of Law and Order:

How many (a) White, (b) Coloured and (c) Indian persons were arrested for trespass by the South African Police in 1987?

Lawsuits against Minister 116. Mr S S VAN DER MERWE

asked the Minister of Law and Order:

  1. (1) Whether any lawsuits have been brought against him in his capacity as Minister of Law and Order by members of the public as a result of police action during unrest-related incidents; if so,
  2. (2) whether he will furnish information regarding these lawsuits; if not, why not; if so, (a) how many lawsuits were brought against him in 1987, (b) what were the circumstances of each lawsuit and (c) what was the outcome in each case?

Because the work involved in compiling this information would be voluminous and timeconsuming, it is not practically feasible to furnish this information.

  4. (4) whether, in 1987, any persons were declared unfit to possess fire-arms; if so, how many?

  1. (1) Whether his Department offers training schemes for Whites; if so,
  2. (2) whether Whites being trained under such schemes received payment whilst being trained; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant particulars of (a) these schemes and (b) the payment so received?
The MINISTER OF MANPOWER:
  1. (1) Yes. Two training schemes are at issue, namely the training of trainees and the training of unemployed persons. Both training schemes provide for the training of all population groups.
  2. (2) Yes
    1. (a) The training of trainees.
      This entails the training of adult persons who meet the admission requirements for training as artisans or as entry level computer programmers.
      The training of unemployed persons. This entails the training of unemployed persons who are keen to improve their job proficiency.
    2. (b) Trainees during their training receive an allowance which varies from R48 to R78 per week, depending on the trainee’s number of dependants.
      Unemployed persons younger than 18 years receive a daily allowance of R1,80 and persons older than 18 years receive a daily allowance of R2,40 whilst they are in training.

The Fund does not differentiate between the various population groups and separate figures are therefore not available.
