From the 1st April the Hon. J. H. Hofmeyr acted as Prime Minister and Minister of External Affairs and the Hon. F. C. Sturrock as Minister of Defence during the absence from the Union of Field-Marshal the Rt. Hon. J. C. Smuts.

From 9th May to 23rd May Maj. the Hon. P. V. G. Van der Byl acted as Minister of Defence and the Hon. S. F. Waterson as Minister of Transport, during the absence from the Union of the Hon. F. C. Sturrock.
