Bore-holes in Western Transvaal i.r.o. sink-holes 642. Mr. E. G. MALAN

asked the Minister of Mines:

(a) How many bore-holes have been sunk since 1st January, 1971, to determine whether dolomite areas in the Western Transvaal are safe as far as sink-holes are concerned and (b) what was the depth of (i) the shallowest and (ii) the deepest bore-hole.

 The MINISTER OF MINES:
  1. (a) 55 by the State’s Technical Committee on Sink-holes and 715 by the mines in the area in question.
  2. (b) (i) 9,144 metres (30 feet). (ii) 213,36 metres (700 feet).
