For written reply:
asked the Minister of National Education:
- (1) Whether members of the National Film Board officially attended a meeting together with representatives of other bodies during the week of 17th to 22nd May, 1971; if so, (a) on what day, (b) where was the meeting held, (c) by whom was it arranged, (d) which other bodies were represented and (e) what was the purpose of the meeting;
- (2) whether any decisions were arrived at; if so, what decisions;
- (3) whether any steps were taken as a result of the decisions; if so, what steps.
- (1) No, but I may mention incidentally that a meeting of the National Film Board was held on 18th May, 1971, and such members of the Film Board as attended it, at the same time informally discussed problems in the film industry with some other persons, including certain individuals in that industry.
- (2) and (3) fall away.
asked the Minister of Indian Affairs:
Whether consideration has been given to the introduction of compulsory education for Indians; if so, (a) when will it be introduced, (b) up to what standard or age, (c) in which provinces and (d) what is the estimated annual cost; if not, why not.
Yes, the possibility of the introduction of compulsory education is being reviewed periodically.
- (a) As soon as I can be assured that sufficient and suitable accommodation as required by section 23 (1) of the Indians Education Act, 1965 is available.
- (b) No final decision has been taken, but it will probably be for pupils between the ages of 7 and 16 years or up to std. VIII.
- (c) In any area of the three provinces concerned in which the circumstances outlined in (a) can be said to apply.
- (d) The additional cost per annum, based on current rates of expenditure and assuming that compulsory education is introduced in all three provinces, has been estimated at R600 000.
