asked the Minister of Transport:
Whether the South African Railways Administration possesses rolling stock, apart from that in the S.A.R. Museum, dating from 1900 or earlier; if so, how many of each type of rolling stock.
Yes, but no rolling stock of the period in question is still in service on open lines.
asked the Minister of Transport:
- (1) Whether the salaries of any section of the White staff of the South African Airways have increased by 40 per cent or less since 1958; if so, which section;
- (2) whether tax-free overseas allowances are paid to members of the White staff of the Airways; if so, what allowances;
- (3) whether any of these allowances have not been increased since 1956; if so, which allowances.
- (1) The salaries have been increased by more than 40 per cent.
- (2) Yes, the trunk service allowance, which is partially non-taxable.
- (3) No.
asked the Minister of Posts and Telegraphs:
Whether the Post Office gave evidence to the Commission of Inquiry into Matters relating to Television in regard to colour techniques; if so, (a) (i) by whom and (n) on what dates was the evidence given and (b) for what technical reasons was preference given to the PAL colour technique over the American NTSC and the French SECAM techniques, as stated in paragraph 188 of the Commission’s report.
Yes, written evidence was submitted in reply to a questionnaire; (a) (i) the Postmaster-General and (ii) 16th March, 1970, and (b) as the matter is still to be’ investigated by a committee as indicated in the statement by the Minister of National Education of 27th April, 1971, it is not considered desirable to furnish these particulars.
asked the Minister of Posts and Telegraphs:
(a) What are the telecommunications channels of the Post Office for the transmission of television, referred to in his statement of 19th May, 1971, and (b) which of these channels are in existence.
- (a) The microwaves and coaxial cable channels that will have to be provided to convey television broadcasts from the broadcasting studios to the transmitters.
- (b) No channels specifically for television have thus far been provided.

On what date was (a) the report of the Department of Cultural Affairs for 1969 received by the Government Printer and (b) the printing of the report completed.

For what reasons the person appointed to the administrative post of (a) Control Officer, Telecommunications Division, Pretoria, (b) Senior Clerk, Work Study Section, Pretoria, (c) Senior Clerk, Stores Division, Pretoria, (d) Superintendent (General), Middelburg (Cape) and (e) Assistant Accountant, Pretoria, mentioned in the Return of Appointments tabled on 25th February, 1971, had previously left or resigned from the Department.
In all cases the resignations were voluntary and for personal and private reasons.
