asked the Minister of Economic Affairs:

(a) From which persons or bodies have applications been received for financial assistance in connection with the film industry during 1970-’71 and during the present financial year, (b) for what purpose was the assistance applied for in each case, (c) what amount was (i) applied for and (ii) granted in each case, and (d) what was the name of (i) the film and (ii) the director in each case where the application was for assistance in producing a film.

  2. (b) The claims were submitted in terms of the existing scheme for the promotion of the local film industry.
  3. (c) (i) and (ii) The amounts claimed as film subsidies are based on the existing formula and depend on boxoffice receipts on each film. The amounts claimed and paid out usually are close to each other. Information in respect of the amounts paid to individual film producers is regarded as confidential. I am, however, prepared, upon request, to furnish the hon. member with the information on a confidential basis. The total amounts paid out during 1969-’70 and to date for the present financial year, were R1 364 382,75 and R47 992,22, respectively.
