1970 Census: Educational standards of Whites and non-Whites 556. Mr. L. F. WOOD

asked the Minister of Statistics:

Whether figures are available from the census of 1970 of the number of White, Coloured, Indian and Bantu who have attained the educational standard of Std. VI, Std. VIII and Matriculation level, respectively; if so, what are the figures; if not, when will such figures be available.

The information about the educational standard is not yet available—according to expectation it will be available in two months’ time.

asked the Minister of Indian Affairs:

  1. (1) How many Indian pupils were enrolled in the Transvaal and Natal respectively at the beginning of the 1971 school year;
  2. (2) (a) how many and (b) what percentage of these pupils in each of these provinces were enrolled in each standard from sub-standard A to Std. 10;
  3. (3) (a) how many schools for Indian pupils have been established in the Cape Province, (b) where are they situated and (c) how many pupils were enrolled in each of these schools at the beginning of the 1971 school year.

What was the unit cost, excluding expenditure of a capital nature, per (a) pupil, (b) primary pupil and (c) secondary pupil in Indian schools in the Transvaal and Natal during the 1969-’70 financial year.

Representations regarding interpretation of Customs law 576. Mr. W. V. RAW

asked the Minister of Finance:

Whether he received any representations during 1970 regarding interpretations given by his Department of the Customs law; if so, (a) on how many occasions and (b) what was the nature of the representations.

The MINISTER OF FINANCE:

Separate particulars of representations addressed to me in connection with interpretations of the Customs and Excise Act by the Department of Customs and Excise are not readily available. Numerous representations on a wide range of aspects regarding customs, excise, and sales duty matters are addressed to me during a year and it is possible that one or more of these cases may be connected with the question put by the hon. member. It is unfortunately, therefore, not practicable to furnish full information. If the hon. member would, however, supply more information of the type of representations about which information is required, attempts will be made to comply with his request.
