asked the Minister of Justice:
- (1) What subsistence and travelling allowances are paid to (a) judges, (b) assessors, (c) prosecutors and (d) other court officials on circuit court duties;
- (2) what remuneration is paid to prosecutors and assessors (a) at the seat of the Supreme Court and (b) on circuit.
- (1)
- (a) Subsistence. R11-00 for every 24 hours actually absent from his headquarters: Provided that where accommodation and subsistence are included in the transport supplied at State expense, the subsistence allowance shall be R2-00 per day. The allowance for part of a day is calculated proportionately according to the number of hours of absence.
Travelling allowance. A judge required to perform official duties away from his headquarters may make use of Government transport. If he uses his privately owned transport, he may be compensated according to the relevant tariff prescribed from time to time in terms of the provisions of the Public Service Act, 1957 (Act No. 54 of 1957). - (b) Subsistence.
- (i) Assessors residing within 5 miles of court.—Reasonable out-of-pocket expenses not exceeding 50 cents per day.
- (ii) Assessors residing 5 miles or more from court.—R4-20 per day. The allowance for part of a day is calculated proportionately according to the number of hours of absence from place of residence.
Travelling allowance. - (i) Where railway or other public transport is available, a rail warrant for a first class return rail ticket is issued or the full expenditure incurred on hiring public transport is refunded.
- (ii) Where railway or other public transport is not available, transport allowance calculated according to the type of vehicle and the engine swept volume of the vehicle used is payable.
- (iii) Where railway or other public transport is available, but the assessor uses his privately owned vehicle or hired motor transport, the transport allowance is restricted to the cost at Government rate of the journey by rail or by other public conveyance.
- (c) and (d)
Subsistence. The relevant tariff prescribed from time to time in terms of the provisions of the Public Service Act, 1957 (Act No. 54 of 1957). When advocates are engaged by the State to appear as representatives of the Attorney-General: R8-00 per day for each day of actual absence from residence.
Travelling allowance. A rail warrant for the issue of a first class return rail ticket or an allowance equivalent to the refund of the rail fare at Government rate if private transport was used.

- (a) It is presumed that the hon. member refers to advocates engaged by the State to appear as representatives of the Attorney-General.
R25-00 per day for each day of actual appearance in court. - (b) R35-00 per day for each day of actual appearance in court.
Assessors. - (a) and (b) R21-00 per day or part of a day of actual attendance in court.
- (a) It is presumed that the hon. member refers to advocates engaged by the State to appear as representatives of the Attorney-General.

What are the scales of rentals paid in respect of official quarters occupied by (a) White and (b) non-White members of the South African Defence Force.

(iii) Non-standard quarters: A variety of tariffs are applicable in respect of non-standard quarters. In general the non-Whites tariffs are about 20 per cent lower than those in respect of White members.
