Secondary and high schools for Bantu pupils 429. Mrs. C. D. TAYLOR

asked the Minister of Bantu Education:

(a) How many (i) secondary and (ii) high schools for Bantu pupils are there in the urban areas of the Republic, (b) where are they situated and (c) how many such schools have been established each year since 1960.

    1. (i) 74 schools provide training up to Junior Certificate level only.
    2. (ii) 20 schools provide training up to Matriculation level.

Work reservation i.r.o. barmen employed in Durban and Pietermaritzburg 440. Mr. G. N. OLDFIELD

asked the Minister of Labour:

  1. (1) Whether a work reservation has been determined in respect of barmen employed in Durban and Pietermaritzburg areas; if so, on what date;
  2. (2) (a) how many applications for exemption from this determination have been received and (b) how many employment posts were involved;
  3. (3) (a) how many of the applications (i) were granted (ii) were refused and (iii) are still under consideration and (b) how many employees are involved in each case.
The MINISTER OF LABOUR:
  1. (1) Yes, with effect from 22nd July, 1963.
  2. (2) (3) (a) (i) and (3) (b) Exemptions are granted for specific periods not exceeding one year at a time. The great majority of applications are for renewal of exemptions previously granted. Altogether 306 applications have been received thus far. At present 42 hotels hold exemption in respect of 91 Indian employees.
  3. (3) (a)
    1. (ii) One in respect of 3 employees.
    2. (iii) Nil.

Whether any representations have been made by the Indian community of Roodepoort in regard to the prices of houses at Azaadville; if so, (a) what representations, (b) when were the representations made and (c) with what result.

  1. (1) (a) How many persons are receiving foster care grants and (b) how many children are in foster care;
  2. (2) what is the maximum amount paid as a foster care grant.

How many persons are receiving war veterans’ pensions in respect of service (a) during the 1899-1902 War, (b) in the 1906 Zulu rebellion, (c) with the 1914 protesting burghers, (d) during the 1914-1918 World War, (e) during the 1939-1945 World War and (f) in the Korean War.

Children’s Act: Children in need of care and adopted 460. Mr. G. N. OLDFIELD

How many children were (a) found to be in need of care and (b) adopted in terms of the Children’s Act during 1969 and 1970 respectively.

Whether consideration has been given to the building of a new Post Office at Congella, Durban; if so, (a) where is it to be erected, (b) what is the estimated cost and (c) when is it hoped to (i) commence building operations and (ii) complete the building.

Yes; (a) on the corner of Umbilo and Ceder Roads (b) R374 000 and (c) (i) 1972 and (ii) 1974.

Houses for the aged and infirm aged 466. Mr. H. MILLER

asked the Minister of Social Welfare and Pensions:

  1. (1) (a) How many (i) new homes and (ii) extensions to existing homes for the aged and infirm aged were built during the period 1st July, 1960 to 30th June, 1970 and (b) how many aged and infirm aged were housed therein;
  2. (2) how many such homes or extensions to existing homes are at present in the course of erection.
The MINISTER OF SOCIAL WELFARE AND PENSIONS:

    1. (a) (i) and (ii) The information is not readily available. The number of homes subsidized by my Department, however, increased by 116 during the period in question.
    2. (b) The figures are not available. The number of aged and infirm aged persons accommodated in subsidized homes for the aged were:
      1 April 1959: 2 840.
      30 June 1970: 9 306.
  2. (2) 70 are in the course of erection and extensions to 27 homes have been approved.
Treated wooden poles purchased by Electricity Supply Commission 471. Mr. E. G. MALAN

asked the Minister of Economic Affairs:

How many treated wooden poles were purchased by the Electricity Supply Commission during each of the last two years for which figures are available.
