Cape Town Docks: Extensions, dry dock and provision for container traffic 117. Mr. H. M. TIMONEY

  1. (1) Whether the final plans for the extensions to the Cape Town Docks have been completed; if so,
  2. (2) whether provision is made for the construction of a dry dock and the handling of container traffic contained therein; if so, what will be the extent of the dry dock.
The MINISTER OF TRANSPORT:
  1. (1) The plans for the first outer basin of the Table Bay Harbour Extension Scheme have been finalized and work on the outer sea walls is already in progress. The second outer basin of this scheme has been planned in outline.
  2. (2) No provision is made in the Harbour Extension Scheme for a dry dock, but the plans for the first outer basin provide for container handling facilities.
Housing loans available to White and non-White Post Office officials 118. Mr. H. M. TIMONEY

asked the Minister of Posts and Telegraphs:

Whether housing loans from the Department are available to postal workers; if so, on what basis are the loans made.

The MINISTER OF POSTS AND TELEGRAPHS:

No, but a scheme exists which enables White, Coloured and Indian officers with dependants, and who are on the permanent establishment, to obtain 100 per cent housing loans up to a maximum of R15 000 from building societies and similar institutions, and whereby the rate of interest on mortgage loans is subsidized out of the Post Office Fund, basically as follows:

Salary not higher than R4 200 p.a.:
Effective rate of interest payable by officer, 4 per cent.
Salary higher than R4 200 p.a., but not higher than R10 200 p.a.: Effective rate of interest payable by officer, 5 per cent.
Salary higher than R10 200 p.a.: Effective rate of interest payable by officer, 6 per cent.
