Mr SPEAKER announced that Drs W J de Villiers and W A Odendaal and Messrs D P A Schutte and A van Breda had been nominated as members of the House of Assembly in terms of section 41 (1) (b) of the Constitution with effect from 21 September 1989.
Drs W J de Villiers and W A Odendaal and Messrs D P A Schutte and A van Breda, introduced by Messrs J J Niemann and J P I Blanche, made and subscribed the oath and took their seats.
Order! I wish to inform hon members that Mr A van Breda, MP, has been appointed as Chief Whip of Parliament with effect from 21 September 1989. My sincere congratulations on his appointment.
Order! I have to announce that I have, in terms of section 70(2)(c) of the Constitution, fixed Wednesday, 27 September 1989, at 10:00 as the time, and the Auditorium of Parliament as the place, for the nomination by opposition parties of the House of Assembly of six persons for appointment by the State President to the President’s Council.

The CHAIRMAN OF THE HOUSE announced that Messrs I J Kruger and E J Twynham had been nominated as members of the House of Representatives in terms of section 42(1)(b) of the Constitution.
Mr I J Kruger, introduced by Messrs G R Wessels and S K Louw, and Mr E J Twynham, introduced by Messrs L T Landers and T Abrahams, made and subscribed the solemn affirmation and took their seats.
The CHAIRMAN OF THE HOUSE announced that Mr I Richards had been appointed as Leader of the House.
The CHAIRMAN OF THE HOUSE announced that the State President had appointed Mr A van Breda, MP, as Chief Whip of Parliament with effect from 21 September 1989.
The CHAIRMAN OF THE HOUSE announced that Mr Speaker had, in terms of section 70(2)(c) of the Constitution, fixed Wednesday, 27 September, at 10:00 as the time, and Committee Room S26 in the Representatives Wing as the place, for the nomination by the opposition parties of the House of Representatives of three persons for appointment by the State President to the President’s Council.
