The Secretary read the following notice, dated 24 December 1986:
It is hereby notified for general information that under and by virtue of the power vested in me by a resolution adopted by the respective Houses of Parliament on 4 September 1986, I, Johannes Wessel Greeff, Speaker of Parliament, accelerate the resumption of business in the House of Assembly, the House of Representatives and the House of Delegates to Wednesday, 28 January 1987, in order to enable the Houses, in terms of section 58 read with section 7 of the Constitution, 1983, to designate members of an electoral college for the election of a Speaker of Parliament.

announced that the Secretary had informed him that the State President had appointed Mr L le Grange, DMS, as Acting Speaker with effect from 1 January 1987 as Mr J W Greeff had resigned as Speaker of Parliament with effect from that date.
announced that the Acting Speaker had in terms of Rule 1(2) amended Rule 2 to make the Rule applicable to the election of a Speaker.
The CHAIRMAN OF THE HOUSE announced that the following vacancies had occurred in the House of Assembly:

- (2) in the seat of a member nominated in terms of section 41 (1) (b) of the Constitution by the nomination of Mr D P de K van Gend with effect from 1 January 1987.
Mr J W Maree and Mr D P de K van Gend, introduced by Mr N J Pretorius and Mr J J Niemann, made and subscribed the oath and took their seats.
announced that in terms of section 58 read with section 7 (1) (b) of the Constitution the House would designate the members of the electoral college for the election of a Speaker.
In terms of section 58 read with section 7 (1) (c) of the Constitution the Chairman requested nominated and indirectly elected members of the House to leave the Chamber.
